Choosing The Best Flooring For DIY Installation

Posted on

If your home needs new flooring but you have a tight budget, you may want to save money by installing the flooring yourself. This might not be practical if you want something like hardwood or carpet, but you can probably install vinyl, laminate, or linoleum flooring yourself if you have DIY skills. You can buy all the supplies you need at a flooring store, like Masters Flooring, and install it yourself to save on the installation fees. Here's a look at which types of flooring are easy to install.

Sheet Vinyl Or Linoleum

This type of flooring is sold in huge rolls just like carpet. If you buy the loose-lay variety, all you have to do is cut the piece to fit the room and then roll it out like a rug. This is the easiest type of flooring to install as long as you can handle and maneuver a huge roll. If you live in a condo, or if you don't have a truck, it can be difficult to get a big roll of sheet vinyl home from the store. Then, you have to be able to lay it out and cut it to the right size. Vinyl is easy to cut, but measuring it and maneuvering it is tricky in a small space.

Vinyl Or Laminate Planks

Planks are much easier to get home since they come in boxes that are easy to carry. Vinyl and laminate are both easy to install since they just snap together, but of the two, vinyl is the easiest. That's because you can cut vinyl with scissors and you need a saw to cut laminate. You'll have to cut some of the pieces to fit around doorways, so if you don't have a saw, then vinyl is the best choice. Vinyl planks can be glued down or snapped together. Some planks even come with adhesive already applied, so all you have to do is peel off the backing and press the plank onto your floor. Both vinyl and laminate look a lot like real wood, so choosing these planks is a good way to have the look of a wood floor at just a fraction of the cost.

Vinyl Tiles

Vinyl tiles are just as easy to install as vinyl planks. You peel off the backing and stick them to your floor. Vinyl tiles come in a variety of colors and patterns, so these are a good choice if you want an artistic look or bright color for your floor. You can buy tiles made of other materials such as ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone, but these are much more difficult to install since you need to use adhesive and grout.

Installing a new floor yourself takes a lot of work, even if you choose one of the easy types of flooring to work with. As long as you take your time and install the floor properly, it should look great and last a long time thanks to the high-quality materials available in flooring today.
